這款「猴子與梨」雕像由約翰·戈特利布·基爾希納（Johann Gottlieb Kirchner，1706-1768）於1731年創作。早在古埃及，人們便已崇敬猴子；自14世紀起，歐洲宮廷也開始飼養牠們。在基督教象徵中，這種動物代表奢華與虛榮，同時也象徵狡詐、淫慾與安逸生活。奧古斯特二世（August der Starke，1670-1733）希望藉由德勒斯登的日本宮（Japanisches Palais）打造全世界最大、最宏偉的瓷器城堡。為此，麥森（Meissen）自1731年起全力投入新作品的創作，其中包括真人大小的大型動物雕塑，這些作品屬於18世紀瓷器藝術中最傑出的典範。約翰·戈特利布·基爾希納的「猴子與梨」模型便是其中之一。儘管這位雕塑家起初在立體材料的藝術處理上頗為吃力，他最終仍與約翰·約阿希姆·坎德勒（Johann Joachim Kaendler，1706-1775）並列，成為麥森大型動物雕塑的大師。兩位模型師的雕塑靈感來自科學圖版、自然標本室中的填充動物標本，以及莫里茨堡城堡（Moritzburg）周邊的動物園和鳥舍，皆為實地取材。與坎德勒不同，基爾希納著重的不在於動態，而在於特徵鮮明的表情。他筆下的猴子展現出近乎人性的神采：融合傳統與新視角的表現方式，正是晚期巴洛克藝術中各種潮流的典型特徵。
