Compare Johannes Schilling's allegorical porcelain figurines Die Nacht and Der Abend. Learn which 35 cm figure or 36 cm group suits your collection.
Quick answer
Choose Die Nacht for a striking solo allegorical figure, or Der Abend for a multi-figure group that tells a story. Your decision hinges on display space and whether you prefer a single dramatic silhouette or a narrative composition.
Why size and form matter for your display
Both pieces are substantial, but their shapes differ. Die Nacht stands 35 cm tall as a single figure, making it easier to place on a mantel or shelf. Der Abend reaches 36 cm as a group, so it needs more depth and a wider surface to show off its multiple figures without crowding.
Allegorical theme and visual impact
Johannes Schilling designed these pieces as part of a series representing times of day. Die Nacht captures a quiet, introspective mood with a single figure, ideal for a serene focal point. Der Abend uses multiple figures to suggest the transition from day to night, creating a more dynamic, narrative scene. If you value symbolism, Der Abend offers richer storytelling; if you prefer a minimalist statement, Die Nacht stands out.
How to decide between Die Nacht and Der Abend
- Display space: Measure your shelf or cabinet depth. Die Nacht (single figure) fits a standard 20 cm deep shelf. Der Abend (group) needs at least 30 cm depth and 40 cm width.
- Visual preference: Choose Die Nacht for a quiet, solitary silhouette. Choose Der Abend for a busy, narrative scene with multiple figures.
- Budget consideration: Der Abend is priced lower than Die Nacht, but both are significant investments. Die Nacht offers a more dramatic single-piece statement at a higher price point. Compare the current prices: Die Nacht is USD 30,660 (was USD 42,000), Der Abend is USD 25,010 (was USD 41,000).
